Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) is the largest children’s literacy nonprofit in the United States. The RIF program at Avon Elementary until 2009 had been funded with 75% Federal dollars and 25% local dollars (PTA donation). In June of that year we received word that we would lose the federal dollars because we did not have a high enough percentage of free and reduced lunch students.
In order to keep the program we have been designated a locally funded program. That means that all monies for the program must come from local sources. It also means that we can still order books with a RIF discount. The cost for the program per year is $600 for books and about $75 for incentive materials. Two book distributions, one in the fall and one in the spring, are held for students at Avon Elementary School as required by the RIF program.Activities to promote reading and incentives (bookmarks and stickers) are part of each distribution.
Mrs. M&M is looking for individuals and organizations that would financially support the program. As little as $5 would supply one child with 2 books for the year. For more information, contact Mrs. M&M at Avon Elementary School – 309-465-3851.
